Three singers, three styles, one common heritage.
A new, genre-diverse song cycle composed by Trina Coleman set to texts by Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes (one of the first to publicly describe the African-American experience). Inspired by the rhythms of jazz, melancholy of blues and grandeur of classical music, the poet’s rich musical background and flourishing historical period are reflected. This performance offers a window into identity and dual heritage.
Composer Trina Coleman (The Voice 2019) was born in the USA, has lived in Norway since 2016, and has decades of experience performing in various genres. The lead vocalist of Low-Fly Quintet, Camilla Tømta, is local to Hamar. She brings experience in gospel and jazz, and she performs as a blues singer in this piece. Siv Misund is a well-established, Oslo-based opera singer with an additional background in gospel and improvisational traditions. Innlandet’s brilliant improviser Ole Gjøstøl joins on piano.
